Parker Lake Day Hike
June Lake Loop - Ansel Adams Wilderness
Wonderful Parker Lake is hidden away in a side canyon near the popular June Lake Loop. Anglers and other visitors flock to the June Lake Loop as soon as the snow melts, but few make the 2-mile hike to the shores of scenic Parker Lake. The arid landscape of sage and stunted trees at the beginning of the hike gives few hints of the alpine beauty that awaits up the valley.

The Parker Lake trailhead is at the end of a dirt road off Highway 158, the June Lake Loop. The Parker Lake turnoff is 1½ miles from Highway 395 at its northern junction with the June Lake Loop. Those coming from the June Lake area find the Parker Lake turnoff about 1¼ miles north of Grant Lake.
The dirt road to the trailhead can be impassible in places in the spring and early summer when runoff is at its peak. A small parking lot and a few signs are all that is found at the stark trailhead. Restrooms and water are not available.
Parker Lake Trail
From a trailhead at the end of a dirt road near Grant Lake, the route to Parker Lake leads directly southwest, paralleling Parker Creek. Starting at 7,775 feet, the trail climbs immediately through sage and rock without shade. Hikers should carry plenty of water. After the first ½ mile the trail drops and continues nearly level for a mile. Occasional clusters of trees offer shade for those seeking cool spots to catch their breath.
The final section of the trail leads into the trees with the sound of Parker Creek chattering nearby. Then the forest parts and the grandeur of Parker Lake and its guardian peaks emerges. Parker Lake rests at 8,300 feet in elevation while distant Mount Lewis, visible on the right, stands at 12,350 feet. Only a short distance beyond is Yosemite National Park.
Find a shady place along the shore to enjoy a snack or picnic lunch. Fishing for brook trout is good at the lake.
