Spooner Lake Day Hike

Spooner Lake is a Nevada State Park slightly north of Highway 50 near Spooner Summit. The nearly level 2.1-mile trail around the lake makes a pleasant outing favored by anglers, picnickers, photographers, and hikers. Visitors enjoy varied ecosystems from sagebrush to pine and aspen forests to colorful meadows.
Spooner Lake Trailhead
Spooner Lake Trailhead is off Highway 28 just north of Highway 50. There is a $10 park entrance fee ($8 for Nevada residents). At the trailhead find a picnic area, restrooms with flush toilets, and drinking water.
An alternate trailhead is along Highway 50 near Spooner Summit.

From the parking lot in Spooner Lake State Park, the trail is clearly marked. Take your choice of directions and set out on a leisurely stroll around the lake. Along your way watch for wildlife such as deer, beavers, and a variety of birds. Benches are located at several spots around the lake as are interpretive signs. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. Horses are permitted from the dam along the west and north side of Spooner Lake to the Tahoe Rim Trail connector.
Things to Know
- Signs warn that Spooner Lake has leeches, so avoid water contact.
- Restrooms and water are available at the trailhead.
- Leashed pets are allowed on the trail.
