General Grant Tree Day Hike

The majestic General Grant Tree stands in a grove of Giant Sequoias along a paved loop trail near Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. Along the ⅓-mile trail visitors also pass the Centennial Stump, the Fallen Monarch, Gamlin Cabin, and many other Giant Sequoias.
The General Grant Tree, the second largest Sequoia in the world, stands 267 feet tall and measures 108 feet around its base at ground level. The tree is estimated to be 1,650 years old. In 1956, President Eisenhower declared the tree a "National Shrine", a memorial to those who died in war.

The General Grant Tree trailhead is a little over a mile from Grant Grove Village. Take Highway 180 north from the village ¼ mile and watch for the turn to the left. At the trailhead is a large parking lot, restrooms, and water. Informational signs at the beginning of the trail show maps of the route.
General Grant Tree Trail
A network of trails connects to the General Grant Tree Loop, allowing visitors to explore the outer portions of the Giant Sequoia grove. Trails also connect to the Crystal Springs Campground and to Grant Grove Village.
Things to Know
- Pets are not allowed on any park trails.
- Water and restrooms are available at the trailhead.
- A local shuttle is no longer in operation.

The North Grove Loop leads off the lower end of the General Grant Tree parking lot. The 1½-mile trails passes through a forest of mixed conifers and Sequoias.
