General Sherman Tree Day Hike
Sequoia National Park
General Sherman Tree, the largest tree in the world measured by volume, is the number one attraction in Sequoia National Park. Visitors are directed to a parking lot and trailhead ½-mile from the tree. The downhill hike is moderately steep, with a number of steps; but it is the return trip, climbing 212 feet up from the General Sherman Tree to the parking lot, that often requires a few rest stops. For those in good health, it is easily accomplished.
General Sherman Tree
The General Sherman Trees stands 275 feet tall and is over 36 feet in diameter at its base. The largest branches on the tree have diameters of nearly 7 feet. A fence around the base of the tree protects the tree's shallow roots. Visitors are asked to remain outside the fence on the paved trail.

The General Sherman Tree Trailhead is off Wolverton Road which leads off the Generals Highway 1¾ miles southwest of the Lodgepole Village turnoff and ⅔-mile northeast of the Sherman Tree handicapped parking lot. Facilities at both parking areas include restrooms.
If some in your party find it difficult to return uphill after visiting the tree, they can wait at the handicapped parking area for you to pick them up there.
Summer Shuttle Bus
In the summer free shuttle buses connect Lodgepole Village and the Giant Forest Museum with both parking lots for the General Sherman Tree. Buses run every 15 minutes. On some winter holiday weekends, a winter shuttle may connect key stops in Sequoia.
General Sherman Tree Trail
The wide, paved trail from the parking lot is interspersed with a number of rest and viewing areas with benches. Exhibits along the trail provide information about the natural history of the trees.
